The Problem
Following years of exposure to weather and the increase of flood events from the River Ouse, part of the planned £16.5 million refurbishment
of the historic Guildhall was to design and install a modern system for flood prevention to the lower river side access.
As a listed building it was important to maintain the existing appearance, so the external windows and access door needed to blend into the structure as closely as possible but still meeting the standard of 21st century flood protection.
To protect the river side basement façade the upgrade called for 1 external flood door, 2 internal flood doors and measures to protect 14 existing stained-glass windows. M3 Floodtec secured the works by proposing secondary flood proof clear glazing units to fit into the masonry frames directly in-front of the existing windows and to provide 3 new steel flood doors.
The 2 internal flood doors were designed as standard kite marked flood doors however the external door was a bespoke design to match the existing 18th century door in almost every access.
Works were completed in February 2021.
