The Problem
The Hurt Arms Hotel lies to the west of the main trunk route, A6, between Derby and Matlock, to the north of Belper and is on the confluence of the River Derwent and River Amber.
The building has its origin dating back to the 19th century, constructed in 1874. Having recently undergone an extensive refurbishment, this a popular venue for functions, weddings and social events.
During flood events, the entire building can be surrounded with flood waters and therefore all aspects of the site had to be assessed for flood resilience.
During periods of heavy rainfall water levels quickly build and flooding from both rivers can rise to levels over 1.0m above the ground floor. This is compounded by highway run off as the drainage gully’s are unable to exhaust due to outlets to the river being surcharged.
The Solution:
Following a comprehensive FRA, a proposal was commissioned to install a combination of passive and deployable flood resilience technologies to all areas and accesses into the building. These were prioritised such that in the event of a flood - will take minimal time to deploy in the less at risk areas, and passive systems being used in high dependency locations that were at the greatest risk.
