The Problem

Dating back to the mid 1700’s and running alongside the River Seven, Longden Coleman is one of the main transport routes into the centre of Shrewsbury via the English Bridge.

Being close to the river, Longden Coleman has a history of flooding with considerable damage and disruption to property which consists of a mixture of private dwellings and smaller commercial retail outlets.

Following the flood events of 2020 several of the properties along the road opted to invest in proactive flood defence and works commenced in June 2021.

Due to the age and structural condition of the properties together with the fact that not all of the locations were adjoining, the ability to completely stop flood water ingress into the properties was remote so a combination of barriers, polymer tanking and sump and pump systems was the best solution. The tanking and barriers were designed to stop most of the water and any residual flow dealt with by the sump and pump units.

This proved to be highly effective with no loss or damage to the properties from the December 21 and February 22 floods that hit the City and the businesses were able to return to work within hours of the flood waters receding.
