Repsol Oil Refinery & Dow Chemical Works, Tarragona, Spain

THE PROBLEM

Although Spain is Europe’s warmest country, torrential downpours can cause flash flooding, particularly in northern parts of the country.

In Tarragona, which is just south west of Barcelona, a flood relief channel has been constructed to convey excess water from the River Ebro to the sea. This flood relief channel runs through an industrial complex at the Port of Tarragona which includes sites operated by Repsol Oil & Dow Chemicals.

Repsol's facility is a crucial centre for the company's European oil refining operations. Originally established in the 1970s, the Tarragona refinery has a total capacity of about 150,000 barrels per day. The Dow Chemical industrial complex has been in Tarragona since 1967 and now consists of two sub-polygons production factories; the site requires a dedicated fire station.

THE SOLUTION

To protect from flooding, two Self Activating Flood Barriers were installed in front of the access to the Repsol site & the Dow Chemical’s fire station.

The first measures 9m wide by 2m high and the second 8m wide by 1.5m high.
