WPD Substations, Nottinghamshire

The problem

Two of Western Power Distribution’s substations in Bulwell and West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, were at risk of flooding being located close to the River Leen and River Trent. The local area was also badly affected most recently in 2013 when intense rainfall in a short time period caused flash flooding.

Western Power Distribution is an important asset to the Midlands, South West and Wales, supplying 7.8 million customers with electricity in the surrounding areas, so it is therefore important that its substations are protected from flood damage 24/7.

The solution

Both sites, Bulwell and West Bridgford, were identified as requiring flood mitigation measures.

The OMO Flood Gates allow easy access to the site, but can be quickly and easily closed by one person in the event of an imminent flood. Once the Gate is locked shut, the site is protected from rising flood water.

The substation at Bulwell required two 0.8m x 0.5m Gates and at West Bridgford two 1.1m x 0.5m Gates.

Each gate was bespoke, designed in-house to fix to the new purpose built concrete walls

The adjustable hinges and locks allow for a quick install, making it easy to position the gate in its optimal position, with perfect sealing.

At both sites, further protection was installed in the form of Anti-Flood Airbricks.
