New Build Estate in Boston, Lincolnshire

THE PROBLEM

In the UK, almost 10,000 new houses a year are being built on flood plains. The proportion of newly created residential properties located in areas of high flood risk increased for the second year running in 2015-16.

Boston in Lincolnshire saw 98% of its new build residential addresses located in the highest flood risk zone – national flood zone 3.

Flood zone 3, the highest risk category as set out by the Environment Agency, is defined as ‘Land having a 1 in 100 or greater annual probability of river flooding; or Land having a 1 in 200 or greater annual probability of sea flooding’.

Lincolnshire based Cyden homes are building a wide selection of 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom homes at de Montfort Park on Mill Road in Boston. Like many areas in Boston, the land is categorised as flood zone 3, and therefore several of the properties needed to be adequately protected.

THE SOLUTION

Flood Defender Barriers were installed to all doorway apertures in 37 properties at the de Montfort Park Development. The Kitemark certified Flood Defender Barrier is a made to measure product with seven different fixing systems to suit all property types. Once initially installed, the Barriers are easy to fit in a few minutes.

In addition to this, Anti-flood Airbricks were also supplied to use in the build.

The new property owners can now move in with the peace of mind that they have bespoke flood mitigation measures, which can be deployed with speed should there be flood warnings in place in the future.
